Who’s Theology Lab for?

Who’s Theology Lab’s audience? I (Scott) think there’s two ways to answer this.

Theology Lab is run out of Highrock church. The topics we explore almost always emerge from actual conversations I have with others, people who are both committed to faith community and value spaces that honor, and don’t dismiss!, their questions. 

And second, we also have the privilege of sharing Theology Lab with others. Over the years I’ve found that our wider audience (roughly) ranges from curious-minded evangelicals to folks who at one point were involved in evangelical traditions, but no longer connect with them, as well as to those who identify with processes like faith deconstruction and reconstruction. (If that’s confusing, that’s okay! It still kinda confuses me. Our blog has real life stories from people who talk about their experiences with these things.)

What’s Theology Lab about?

A real example is helpful for this question. We spent a year on the topic of American evangelicalism.

Among those I know, the world evangelical(ism) raises a lot of different opinions and feelings. So, we brought together voices from both within and beyond the evangelical world to discuss the issues at the heart of those conversations, folks like Kristin Kobes Du Mez, Walter Kim, David Brooks and Russell Moore. Addressing topics like these with guests is part of what we do. We’re looking at faith and AI this year. 

Another part of Theology Lab includes constructive, forward looking proposals on what it means to believe today. The tagline for our Beyond Simple Answers series captures this vision: searching for a theological vision when simple answers aren't enough.

Our goal isn’t to prescribe what people must believe, but to create space for thinking about what you believe, and why, especially at a time when many are looking for conversations that genuinely honor – and again, that don’t dismiss – their questions about God, reading the Bible with open eyes, and more. 

Who’s who?

Theology Lab is organized by Scott Rice. Scott holds a ThD in Theology from Harvard Divinity School and is the author of a book and several articles in academic journals. He also writes regularly for publications including Covenant Companion.

Beyond Simple Answers is co-hosted by Greg Fung and Kristin H. Lee. Greg has a background in ministry and works in technology. Kristin is a primary care physician, the author of We Mend With Gold, and the creator of the popular Bookstagram account @ktlee.writes
